The current version (1.10.0) of app-emulation/virtiofsd has a bug that prevents it from working on kernels without user namespace support. This is a regression introduced in 1.10.0 and it's fixed in 1.10.1. Since 1.10.0 is the only version currently available in Portage, it's not possible to use virtiofsd without user namespace support. Version 1.10.1 was released four months ago, so I think it's time for a bump.
