Your error has nothing to do with this package/bug. Check your configuration, you have set root-hints option on your own. Somewhere between net-dns/unbound-1.5.1-r2 and 1.8.0-r1, upstream switched to chroot setup by default. So you need to adjust your setup accordingly (in this case, move /etc/unbound/named.root to /etc/unbound/etc/named.root or update path in your unbound.conf to match chrootdir). Please keep this bug focused on =net-dns/dnssec-root-20170203-r1 stabilization.
