Upon system boot, the permissons for /dev/sound/* are set to root:audio 600. The permissions are re-set to root:audio each time X is started, or re-started.


Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Reboot or start X.
2.
3.

Actual Results:  
The permissions for /dev/sound/* were changed from whatever they had been to
root:audio 600.

Expected Results:  
The permissons for /dev/sound/* should have been set at root:audio 660.

I have tracked down the problem to an incorrectly configured console.perms file,
and am submitting a patch that resolves this issue.

I could be wrong but I believe this to be a duplicate (or far relative ;p) of http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55305 . I've been tracking this bug forever because it's a real pain in my @$$.

This bug and the one you linked to: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55305 seem to be the same problem. Has anyone else had success with the patch attached to this report?

Actually I just noticed that patch hit pam(ver here)-r2 which is ~x86. So time to test eh? :)

Pam 0.77-r1 still contains the broken console.perms.

Its been over a month since this bug was originally posted.  Has this bug been acknowledged by the gentoo dev's? Been fixed? Anything?

PORBLEM
    Actually, this exact problem was reported as far back as April 10, 2002, bug #1658.

BUT
    Since this is a community distribution; and according to Bug #28407 comment #36
    gentoo's pam man is only reviewing+testing instead of writing fixes himself, I
    think you're supposed to fix it yourself and attach patches here! Just describing
    it is not enough! Everithing else is getting nowhere, even if it's security related
    and the proposed solution couldn't be more clear. Since the way pam is currently
    going on gentoo will cause more trouble than it solves, I myself have given up all
    hope a long time ago.

Should be fixed in pam-0.78.
