Please vote here, if you are interested in >=media-gfx/yafaray-3
and would like to support the development by testing.

We have media-gfx/yafaray-0.1.1 in the tree now, but will likely have to clean it. We can not bump the ebuild. 

yafaray-3 is also in a few other distributions:
https://repology.org/metapackages/?search=yafaray

A (proxied) maintainer is welcome too. 
Graphics Project will take this ticket as long as media-gfx/yafaray is not treecleaned and set it to maintainer needed afterwards.

I would certainly be interested. Been looking to experiment with other renderers for Blender and can make myself available for testing. Is there an ebuild in the works for yafaray-3 or has nobody run with this yet?

Not as far as I know, you can start from scratch.
