Description Vladimir Romanov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-02-06 15:55:37 UTC
Not long time ago, i joined a translationproject.org for Russian translation, and choose gawk. Now i translating a .pot file and will end today or tomorrow. I contacted FSF and asked, can i translate also .texi doc and man page of gawk. FSF answered, that
- They do not have any procedure of man pages translating (and, in fact, they have none translated yet for GNU products)
- I can translate .texi, so it will be included in gawk, but only if i sign the paper, that i give all rights to FSF, send it via postmail to them, then receive one copy back. Sigh! I hate lawyers, and, postmail too, by the way.

Why i can simply file a bug here with translated man, and it is comitted, but i can't do that in FSF?

So, question: if i can't do that in gawk itself, can we update translated man or texi as a patch to gawk ebuild. Yes, so it will be accessible only in Gentoo, but... it's my distro :).

If someone could somehow include .texi and man in gawk itself, i will give a translations to that person.

Reproducible: Always

sorry, but no. i don't want to carry translations for every package that someone processes but doesn't want to send upstream.

while it's true that generally the umbrella GNU project discourages man pages, it's up to the individual project to decide whether to carry them.
