Anyway, I'd suggest to create a snapshot. One of the reasons for not using the vcs directly is to avoid excessive load. However distfiles-local infrastructure is not provided for maintainers of overlays, so LIVEVCS.unmasked check could be disabled when repo_name != gentoo.
