I'd suggest to move the whole (improved) Locale section to: 8. Configuring your System / 8.c. System Information (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=8#doc_chap3) This is where the keymap and the clock are defined. I can do it if you agree. Does it mean we're going to ask users to go utf-8 by default? That'd be great! Are the utf8/unicode/whatever USE flags enabled in all profiles? The locale selection was put that early in the handbook due to historic reasons imo (stage1 and stage2 systems where glibc needed to be (re)build, which caused a massive CPU consumption if it generated all possible locale definitions). I don't mind having that part moved to cam's suggested location, enhanced a bit so that we tell users to really have (at least) one UTF-8 locale in it. I hope that addresses the council's recommendation sufficiently. Cam, you asked for it, go do it ;-) *ping* Any progress here? The locale instructions moved to http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=8 |
