Description Lars 2010-12-25 17:18:40 UTC
xorg-server-1.9.2 became stable, and thus hal is no longer supported, which outdates the section "3. Configuring Xorg" - "Using HAL"...

please include the new information (relevent parts from http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.8-upgrade-guide.xml ) into The X Server Configuration HOWTO.

(could have saved me some time - https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349676 )

CCing the X11 team for ideas on how to rewrite the doc to just use udev/xorg for configuration. I saw the 1.8/1.9 upgrade guides; any additional notes or ideas?

Since I wrote that guide I don't think i forgot something, altho if you think something missing let me/rest of the team know and i can give you correct examples and approaches :)

to make this clear again: the upgrade guide is fine. just the original howto (URL linked above) contains sentences like "By default, Xorg uses HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) to detect and configure devices such as keyboards and mice." which is simply wrong now. people, how make a fresh install tomorrow and do everything by the book, may have problems, e.g., to get their keyboard layout working.

maybe someone could annouce the upgrade guide in eselect news ?

Irrelevant to this bug; please file a separate bug for that and assign it to the x11 team.

Fixed in CVS.

X11 team, you should read through the guide and let me know if there's anything you'd like to add.
