emerge -U world is trying to install the package alsa-driver into my system, this is a new package and not needed. Further, compilation of this package will always fail under a 2.6 kernel as alsa has been moved inside the kernel space. 

Alsa is the preffered sound architecture under 2.6 with 0ss being depricated. Untill the ebuild tests for a 2.6 environment the package alsa-driver should be masked as it is does not consider 2.6 users, preventing their systems updating cleanly.
