Description Ron Helzer 2003-11-13 17:58:47 UTC
While installing Gentoo 1.4 on an old Compaq Deskpro P-II 200 MHz, following the instructions at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml, at step "Entering the chroot" the chroot command fails with "illegal instruction". I am using the basic live CD ISO here: http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo/releases/x86/1.4/livecd/basic/x86-basic-1.4-20030911.iso

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Follow the Gentoo Linux 1.4 Installation Instructions
2.At step "Entering the chroot", enter command "chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash"
3.Receive error "Illegal Operation"

Actual Results:
chroot command failed, preventing completion of the installation.

Expected Results:
chroot should have changed the root to /mnt/gentoo

I see this is a dupe... Please update the gatech.edu mirror!

O.K. I see the gatech.edu mirror has a newer build than the one that should have solved this problem...

"avenj has made new tarballs and GRP-packages.
The isos timestamped 20030807 include the fixed tarballs and GRP.
The problem seems solved."

I'm having the chroot "illegal operation" problem with the 20030911 build.

D'oh... Wrong Stage 2 image. Turns out this isn't a P-II system, just a 586.
