On my system, emerge mplayer halts at: ... Checking for cdparanoia ... no Checking for libcdio ... yes Checking for bitmap font support ... yes Checking for freetype >= 2.0.9 ... If I kill that process, it just halts later. However, the following gets through the configure script: FEATURES=-sandbox emerge mplayer Just like in the Arch bug report, I have nvidia and using sandbox to execute the freetype testing tool doesn't work (in my case, a call to futex() never finishes). However, setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_PRELOAD don't help (does sandbox use them?). Here's emerge --info: Portage 2.1.7.1 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0/desktop, gcc-4.4.1, glibc-2.10.1-r0, 2.6.30-gentoo-r4 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.30-gentoo-r4-x86_64-AMD_Athlon-tm-_64_X2_Dual_Core_Processor_4200+-with-gentoo-2.0.1 Timestamp of tree: Fri, 16 Oct 2009 03:00:01 +0000 distcc 3.1 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu [disabled] app-shells/bash: 4.0_p33 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.9-r1 dev-lang/python: 2.6.3, 3.1.1-r1 dev-util/cmake: 2.6.4-r3 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.1 sys-apps/openrc: 0.5.1-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 2.1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.63-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.2, 1.11 sys-devel/binutils: 2.19.1-r1 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.1 sys-devel/libtool: 2.2.6a virtual/os-headers: 2.6.30-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-ident" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/lib/hsqldb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/php/apache2-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cgi-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cli-php5/ext-active/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-ident" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="assume-digests distlocks fixpackages news parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirrors.easynews.com/linux/gentoo/" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,-z,now" LINGUAS="en ja" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X Xaw3d a52 aac aalib acl acpi alsa amd64 ao arts audiofile berkdb bluetooth branding bzip2 cairo cddb cdr cjk cli consolekit cracklib crypt cups curl dbus dc1394 dri dts dvd dvdr dvdread emacs emboss encode esd evo fam ffmpeg firefox flac fortran gdbm gif gnome gnutls gpm gstreamer gtk gtkhtml hal htmlhandbook iconv ieee1394 ipv6 isdnlog jpeg jpeg2k kde ldap leim libnotify libsamplerate lm_sensors mad matroska mikmod mmap mmx mng modules mono motif mp3 mp4 mpeg mudflap multilib musepack ncurses nls nptl nptlonly offensive ogg openal opengl openmp oss pam pcre pdf perl png ppds pppd python qt3 qt3support qt4 quicktime readline reflection samba sdl session slang sndfile speex spell spl sse sse2 ssl startup-notification svg sysfs tcpd theora threads thunar tiff truetype unicode usb v4l v4l2 vdpau vorbis winbind x264 xcomposite xml xorg xulrunner xv xvid zlib" ALSA_CARDS="emu10k1 intel8x0" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_digest authn_anon authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock dbd deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers ident imagemap include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation proxy proxy_ajp proxy_balancer proxy_connect proxy_http rewrite setenvif so speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" APACHE2_MPMS="prefork" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="en ja" SANE_BACKENDS="hp" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia vga vesa" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY I am also having the same issue ( hanging freetype ) on two boxes ( amd64 and x86 ). So if you don't use openal remove its use flag and it should work as a workaround at least. I can confirm this Without openal USE flag configure is done well I also confirm that problem was solved by using USE="-openal" for mplayer. Thanks for resolution of problem. I consider that it is necessary to left this this bug as unresolved due to the actuality of it at present time.
