Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log after kdm fails. I've experienced this problem too, and for me Xorg fails when trying to initialize the Nvidia GLX extension. And you're using Nvidia, just like me. I haven't tried /etc/init.d/xdm restart though. Okay, I restarted xdm, and it does work like you said. I'm using AMD64 like you, could anyone confirm if it works with nvidia-drivers on x86? I've experienced a similar problem here with kdm-3.5.10, also having an amd64 system and a nVidia graphics card. It seems that some drivers (or maybe device files in /dev?) are not fully initialized when booting the system. When the boot process is complete, I can log into the system in text mode and run `/etc/init.d/xdm restart`. Putting a short pause into the xdm init script solved the problem. Same problem here for a long time. If the computer has a good day, then one time is enough. On other days I have to restart xdm 3 or 4 times to get the login screen. This behaviour occures for me since upgrading to 4.2.2. including the versions of the testings overlay (e.g. 4.1.85). System: amd64 Graphics card: nvidia Driver issue, try different one it should start working. Any updates on this? Is this still happening for you with kde 4.3 and latest nvidia driver? Thanks :) (In reply to comment #6) > Any updates on this? At least the desktop looks much nicer than before. Klaas (In reply to comment #7) > (In reply to comment #6) > > Any updates on this? Could this be related to the timeout set on kdm startup? Check OpenTimeout in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc - try increasing the value and see if that fixes kdm startup. Same here. nvidia-drivers-185.18.31 + kde-meta-4.3.1 card: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9600M GS [10de:0648] (rev a1) I don't have any *Timeout* config in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc Same problem here (kdm-4.3.2, nvidia-drivers-180.60, xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r2). Workarounded by increasing ServerTimeout from 15 to 30 in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc Same here (kdm-4.3.1-r2, nvidia-drivers-180.60, xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r2). ServerTimeout helped too Looking at my kdmrc, I see the following: # How long to wait before timing out a display connection attempt. # Default is 120 #OpenTimeout=120 I'll check the original file in the tarball later and will uncomment it to see if we get this fixed. Confirming problem but with Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller, kdm-4.3.5, xf86-video-intel-2.9.2 and xorg-server-1.6.5-r1. Workaround for me was setting ServerTimeout=30 (default ServerTimeout=15) in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. ServerTimeout is set to 30 now (in 4.4.2 and live ebuilds in overlay), thanks for the report and all the feedback |
