Bug 167379

Summary: gdm-themes-2.0-r1 contains undistributable themes
Product: Gentoo Linux Reporter: Arthur Hagen <art-gt>
Component: [OLD] GNOMEAssignee: Steve Dibb (RETIRED) <beandog>
Status: RESOLVED FIXED

Description Arthur Hagen 2007-02-17 20:39:04 UTC
gdm-themes contains several copyrighted works, for which the submitters have no rights. An "as-is" license does not imply that copyrighted works can be distributed.

Example: "Fallen Angel" contains an image by Luis Royo. (While the luisroyofantasy.com site allows you to download the image for use as a wallpaper, legally downloading it does not make it public domain or transfer copyrights to the downloader.)

Similar for several other themes, which contain works copyrighted by (among others) Blizzard Entertainment.

Suggestion: Unless upstream can provide a license for each theme, gdm-themes (and probably any 3rd party art.gnome.org content) should be removed from Gentoo.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Not maintained by the gnome herd.
Comment 2 Arthur Hagen 2007-02-18 11:50:14 UTC
According to Bug 109755 humpback doesn't support gdm-themes anymore, and the gnome herd doesn't want it.
Can someone reassign it to orphaned or find someone to do a coup de grâce on this package?
Comment 3 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-07-03 11:57:13 UTC
treecleaners, please do your magic.

13:51:50 <@HumpBack> jakub: How about a remove of gdm-themes from the tree?
13:52:32 <@jakub> HumpBack: yeah, esp. wrt the licensing issues
13:52:47 <@jakub> I've had a quick look and it looks like complete mess
13:53:17 <@HumpBack> jakub: It is. Mail to -dev or just remove the bastard?
13:53:18 <@jakub> HumpBack: not really keen on 'auditing' which licenses are OK or not
13:53:27 <@jakub> HumpBack: eh, p.masked and then mail
13:54:04 <@jakub> HumpBack: just emphasize in the mail that it will be removed unless someone does identify the unlicensed stuff
                  (which noone will do :P)
13:54:10 <@HumpBack> jakub: whant to please do that. I have no access to my development machine right now

x11-themes/gdm-themes
Comment 5 Tad Marko 2007-07-08 15:34:58 UTC
So now there are only a few themes available for GDM on Gentoo?
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2007-07-08 20:55:59 UTC
via the portage tree, correct ... nothing is keeping you from installing themes by hand
Comment 7 Sybren Harmsma 2007-07-09 23:12:45 UTC
I have created a new and legalized ebuild for the Falling Angel GDM theme
(one of the GDM themes in the now masked x11-themes/gdm-themes)

See bug #184786.

Maintainer wanted!
Comment 8 Luis Medinas (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-09 04:47:30 UTC
why don't the artwork team takes this ? It's cool to have this teams on the tree i or maybe gnome herd don't mind to maintain it but maybe it could be artwork team job.
What do you think of this ?
Comment 9 Luis Medinas (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-09 05:12:03 UTC
adding Cla as artwork team lead.

I don't think that artwork team will be keen on doing licensing audit on this package. :P
Comment 11 Steve Dibb (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-10 22:30:55 UTC
I'll take over maintainership of the package, and get the copyright issues fixed.
Comment 12 Steve Dibb (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-11 21:48:22 UTC
removed p.mask, kicked out old themes, all new ones with known licenses, committed to CVS.
