Summary: emerge sys-kernel gives access violation
Product: Gentoo Linux Reporter: Jan Willemson <janwil>
Component: [OLD] Core systemAssignee: Gentoo Linux bug wranglers <bug-wranglers>
Status: RESOLVED DUPLICATE

Hardware: x86
OS: Linux

Runtime testing required: ---

Description Jan Willemson 2003-02-12 04:44:22 UTC
I started to install Gentoo step-by-step by the Web instructions on my Pentium 3
machine. Everything was fine until step 17 (emerging kernel). The command

emerge sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

started first by emerging Tcl/Tk and after that gave the following error message:

ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY

chown: /var/cache/edb
chown: /var/cache/edb/dep
open_wr: /var/cache/edb/mtimedb

I obtained no kernel sources and was unable to proceed.

Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Do as the Gentoo x86 installation web tutorial tells to until step 17. Choose
the installation path through Stage 3. The only thing I changed was
/etc/make.conf, where I chose

USE="apm avi cups dvd flash java mozilla mpeg spell tcltk tetex truetype usb wmf
xmms"

Actual Results:
I obtained the abovedescribed message, no kernel source appeared and no symlinks
were created to /usr/src/linux.

Expected Results:
I would expect the kernel source to appear.

I saw some similar warnings about access during previous emerges as well, but
they did not seem to do any harm so I ignored them. I did plain install without
any other OS running at the same time from 1.4rc2 CD.
