I have merged and umerged mplayer several times to try and get this to go away but depclean always still wants to remove it, mpalyer is definately in my world file as can be seen below...
cat /var/lib/portage/world | grep mplayer
media-video/mplayer
media-video/kmplayer
emerge -p --depclean
