Description gentoo@danielquinn.org 2006-08-08 11:35:37 UTC
If you try to do an emerge --fetch for vmware-esx-console (~x86 in package.keywords) you ge the following familiar message... except that it doesn't tell you the package name or where to get it :-(

# emerge -f app-emulation/vmware-esx-console
Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) app-emulation/vmware-esx-console-2.5.3.24171 to /
!!! VMware-console-2.5.3-24171.tar.gz not found in /usr/portage/distfiles

!!! app-emulation/vmware-esx-console-2.5.3.24171 has fetch restriction turned on.
!!! This probably means that this ebuild's files must be downloaded
!!! manually. See the comments in the ebuild for more information.

 * Please place  in /usr/portage/distfiles

!!! Fetch for /usr/portage/app-emulation/vmware-esx-console/vmware-esx-console-2.5.3.24171.ebuild failed, continuing...

!!! Some fetch errors were encountered. Please see above for details.

VMware esx is a commercial package that requires you to have an active account w/ proof of license to download on www.vmware.com. You should go to www.vmware.com and click on downloads, and then login. Place the resulting file /usr/portage/distfiles.

As another option, you can login to the web gui for ESX 2.5.3 and click on linux client at the bottom of the page, which will allow you to download the tarball.
Comment 2 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-22 12:57:30 UTC
The information for pkg_nofetch is lacking. It should inform the user essentially what you said here, so they know where to get the file.

Integer, please be aware that when you post to a bug, you are not necessarily still looking at the same bug, unless you follow the "return to bug XXXXX" link. I believe this information was for bug 142811, even though it actually related to 182595. Please see the comments in the other bugs, thanks... 5:)
Comment 5 George Shammas 2009-01-29 09:53:56 UTC
This bug is now very old, I was trying to install this package to manage ESXi 3.5U3 but, I see now that this is only for ESX. Seeing how ESX is also on version 3.5, I think this package should have a description change to insure people know that this won't work with ESXi.

I found this bug by googling the file from the manifest, VMware-console-2.5.3-24171.tar.gz. I add a comment incase anyone else finds this bug and doesn't spend 15 minutes trying to figure out why they can't find the package.

Either way, this bug is safe to close.
Comment 6 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-02-01 21:53:44 UTC
Ok, since this is so old, and we have absolutely no way of updating it (hence it's unmainted), I've given it last rites:

# Mike Auty <ikelos@gentoo.org> (1 Feb 2009)
# Masked for removal in 30 days. Old and unmaintained.
# Vmware herd has no access to the product, and it's
# for a very old version. See bug 143232.
