As explained in the above URL, and in bug 63918, Flash and Java plugins always crash the entire browser (I've only tested on mozilla based-browsers so far) when loaded on a 32-bit color display. There is a very easy workaround to this bug - export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 before starting the browser, however the recommendation in the past has been to put this in an env.d file. With the forthcoming release of Gnome 2.12 and GTK 2.8, which take advantage of ARGB visuals, making XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS global is no longer an effective strategy, so I propose that it be moved either to the mozilla-launcher script (The ideal place), or otherwise to the individual browser's launching scripts (which in turn call mozilla-launcher). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install xorg-x11 (XFree86 doesn't support 32-bit visuals) 2. Set your display to 32 bit 3. Install netscape-flash and navigate your favorite browser to a flash-based website Actual Results: The browser crashes Expected Results: The site should have displayed

I agree. I have the same problem with Firefox, and his solution is best. It allows you to use ARGB visuals and still use your browser.
Any plugin that crashes firefox/mozilla based browsers needs to be filed upstream with plugin dev not gentoo.
