Description Hans-Christian Armingeon 2005-07-21 06:51:52 UTC
Hi,

I am having serious trouble with kde. When I login, and start kde, t hangs at
the second Image at the splashscreen (starting system services). It is blinking
forever, but nothing happens.

I am finding nothin in xerrors. How to increase the debiglevel of kde?

Revdep rebuild didn't fnd anything.

Thanks in advance,

Johnny

Unfortunately there are many possible causes for this problem and it's
difficult to guess what's going on under the hood.
There's a bit of documentation here, though:
http://www.kde.org/areas/sysadmin/startup.php

In general this is a problem about the setup of the sockets for interprocess
communication; I suggest, in order:

1) remove everything in /tmp/kde-* /tmp/ksocket-* /var/tmp/kdecache-*
2) remove ~/.Xauthority ~/.ICEauthority
3) try with a newly created user

Well, that didn't help.

Is there anywhere a debug switch for kde?

kdebugdialog will popup a window that lets you set the debug levels, but if you
can't get into kde I'm not sure how you'll run it

rebuilding kdelibs and kdebase and rebooting fixed the issue.

Closing to invalid.

Sorry for wasting time.

But, by the way. Every time I upgrade my amd64 servers with gentoo, I pray that
everything works fine after the upgrade.
How can I use gentoo in a production environment? Such a thing that happened
here would be horrible, if such an thing would hit my servers.

How can I test a new package, before installing, an/or fallback to an old
version, if it doesn't work?

Not using the CFLAGS of bug 99459 is s good start :)

This is a many-sided topic and should be better discussed on a mailing list.
In fact, you can already get an idea of the different opinions on the matter
by looking at the lengthy discussions about it on gentoo-dev. Here's one, for
instance:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/29078
but you will many others by searching the archives.
