after booting the installation-cd the splash takes over and shows after a while "Press F2 for more information" (or something similar) -- but at that time the keymap-chooser has already timed out. so if a non-us.keymap-user patient waits for a regular information he will have a us-keymap and no chance to decide while booting. either the information about pressing F2 has to be shown far earlier or the keymap-question should be announced on the splash so an unsuspecting user will be warned. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. boot from installation cd 2. wait for message "Press F2 ..." 3. see the keyboard-chosing-dialog out of reach Actual Results: ? see "Details" Expected Results: asking for keymap Portage 2.0.51.22-r1 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r0, 2.6.1 2-gentoo-r5 i686) ========================================================== ======= System uname: 2.6.12-gentoo-r5 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.86GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 ccache version 2.4 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4-r1, 2.4.1-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.11 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.18-r1 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -msse2 -mmmx -msse" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share / config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/shar e/ config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -msse2 -mmmx -msse" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.wh2.tu-dresden.de/pub/mirrors/gentoo ftp://ftp.gentoo. mesh-solutions.com/gentoo/ ftp://pandemonium.tiscali.de/pub/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X acpi alsa arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts crypt cups emboss encode fam f oomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gpm imlib ipv6 jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mikmod moti f mp3 mpeg ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl spell ssl tcltk tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts xml2 xv zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
It also says in the handbook that if you need to select your keymap, to press F2 immediately. I have no plans on working to change this. If spock wants to attempt to change this in splashutils, then he has my permission, but otherwise, I'd say either WONTFIX or INVALID since it is documented.
Actually, pressing F2 won't work with the new splashutils, as there is no splash daemon running to handle the keypress at this point of the boot. Instead, Alt+F1 has to be pressed. The new 2005.1 livecds should automatically display the message about Alt+F1. If you want, you can tweak the linuxrc script (used by genkernel) to change the message ("Press Alt+F1 is you want to change your keymap." or something).
it does not say "Press F2 _immediately_" -- so one would wait for the message, which comes to late.
It doesn't matter that it doesn't say to press it immediately. In fact, only someone out to prove a point would even bring this up as a first-time user, yes, the ones that need to know to press F2 to see the keymap selection and would be reading this in the Handbook, wouldn't *know* that it *ever* tells them to press F2, so they would probably do so when the splash screen appears. Anyway, none of that matters... :P It's all been changed. Docs-team: Can you change it in the Handbook for 2005.1/Online draft to say "Press Alt-F1 immediately" rather than telling the user to press F2?
Fixed in amd64 and x86 instructions for 2005.1. Main Handbook left unchanged.
But it was updated in the draft for the main Handbook, correct?
It is a draft for 2005.1 version containing instructions specific for networkless install. I'm not sure if the main Handbook should be updated to include it as well as *current* Install CDs don't support this...
Right, but there should be a draft for the online version, too. It needs to be update.
Fixed in doc/en/handbook/draft/hb-install-{x86,amd64}-medium.xml. Hope that's all...
Thanks... =]
