This is a preliminary version of the document. Needs to be spell & syntax corrected. Shyam, all yours!
Created attachment 63506 [details] bluetooth-guide.xml Please, note that rane (Lukasz Damentko) did some XML corrections on it :) Give rane a fame point! fox2mike, please note that there is quite a good quantity of style problems and that the content is still up to you ;)
Righto, will have a look at this one in a while :)
Ok, a few comments: 1) Many bluetooth devices do not appear as usb/pci devices straight out of the box such as the logitech base station for the MX900 and the devices in the new Apple Powerbooks. Before you can even recognise it as a bluetooth device you may need to do hid2hci on it. So I recommend you at least include a note about this. 2) You might want to mention the bemused server which is part of kde-bluetooth and also an individual package. In my opinion this is one of the most useful features of bluetooth as long as you have a device (such as a phone) capable of using it. 3) One other thing you may want to consider is going a bit off-topic with respect to phone connections. Another incredibly useful feature of bluetooth is being able to use your phone as an internet connection using GPRS or 3G, and it would be nice to have a decent document on how to do that maybe as just a link from this doc but geared towards the bluetooth user unlike the many docs (Not really for gentoo as far as I've seen) which already exist on this which are mostly geared towards infrared. This is a highly desirable application of bluetooth from a users point of view but is not easy to set up unless you're a pretty advanced user so something straight forward to get them going would be ideal. I've not tried anything technical from this document but it looks good.
Created attachment 63519 [details] bluetooth-guide.xml-rc2 This solves issues stated in paragraphs 1 and 3 of Comment #3. Additionally, I've added some minor things on the doc.
Created attachment 63625 [details, diff] bluetooth-guide-rc3.patch Please, apply the patch above to bluetooth-guide.xml-rc2
I got lots of feedback from Marcel Holtmann. I'll update the guide ASAP. There it goes his reply: ----- >We got a 'release candidate' document and we've performed some changes >> on it. If you'd be so kind... :) >> >> http://rane.cjb.net/bluetooth-guide.xml >> >> Note that the doc is located at the computer of one of the document editors. in general the word USB and Bluetooth are written this way. You never should write them only lower-case. For Bluetooth it is important, because the Bluetooth SIG owns the wordmark and there exists strict regulations about the use of it. You missed the Bluetooth PCMCIA drivers in your list. The bluez-bluefw package is deprecated. You only need to install the bluez-firmware package to get the Broadcom firmware files. You changed the default hcid.conf to enable "auth" and "encrypt". Don't do this, because this invokes security mode 3. You don't wanna have this and I don't wanna answer stupid request in the mailing list, because they followed your guide. Keep the default hcid.conf. It is doing the correct job for most people. The text about the rfcomm usage is still wrong. It speaks about the local device as the first parameter. It is the RFCOMM TTY device node and not the device itself. -----
Created attachment 63813 [details] bluetooth-guide.xml-rc4 - Added PCMCIA drivers - Replaced bluez-bluezfw with bluez-firmware - Corrected RFCOMM nuisances - Text aligned to 80 - All bluetooth converted to Bluetooth - All usb converted to USB - Disabled mode 3 and added a warning to people that might want to use it
Created attachment 63915 [details] bluetooth-guide.xml-rc5 - Added Marcel Holtmann as contributor - Added a notice about additional pin helpers - Corrected some minor spelling mistakes
Created attachment 63931 [details] bluetooth-guide.xml (rc6) This is a non-programmed update: - Corrected capitalization mistakes (my fault)
Looks like this guide needs this fix: you don't need to add hotplug to runlevels take a look at the comments of this bug and fix this heeh http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97662
Guys, do we really need the "About the content of this guide" section? I think it's slightly redundant (chapters can be selected from above) and no other official doc/guide/howto has such a section....as far as I've seen atleast. What say?
Acknowledgements can go in the end, no need to have them right at the top....
In reply to Comment #11: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp/doc/doc-policy.xml (See covered topics) However, feel free to change it at will. In reply to Comment #12: About acknowledgements: Looks like the policy is to send it to bottom.
(In reply to comment #13) > In reply to Comment #11: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp/doc/doc-policy.xml > (See covered topics) However, feel free to change it at will. LOL. :p I wonder how I missed that.... ;) /me runs We'll see how it looks in the guide when the rest of the changes/stuff is in. And then take a call on this.
Created attachment 64504 [details, diff] Minor typos fixed, mention btexmms and multisync rane, could you put up the latest version on the web so that us lower beings can read it in pretty rendered Gentoo-doc style? :) Uploaded patch for some minor typosand mention to mention 'btexmms'[1] and 'multisync'[2] as well. This is a really neat doc - thanks! [1] http://www.gentoo-portage.com/media-plugins/xmms-btexmms [2] http://multisync.sourceforge.net/
Created attachment 64505 [details, diff] Minor typos fixed, mention btexmms and multisync (fixed typos in patch)
(In reply to comment #16) > Created an attachment (id=64505) [edit] > Minor typos fixed, mention btexmms and multisync (fixed typos in patch) Uggh...uploaded corrected patch.
(In reply to comment #16) > Created an attachment (id=64505) [edit] > Minor typos fixed, mention btexmms and multisync (fixed typos in patch) Gee, my life is being made really easy :) I was going to write up on multisync anyway *and* btexmms... I'll incorporate the stuff Arun's given in the patch. As well as prolly add to it. I'm not patching as in since the doc has changed since rc6. If you want to make my life more easy, you could run the below URL with a ?passthru=1 and re-diff so I'll apply the changes right away. Arun, the latest version is at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/draft/bluetooth-guide.xml PS : Tis okay, we'll fix em typos ;)
Changing URL to reflect location of up to date doc..
/usr/bin/bluepin does not work - it does evil things with regards to setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable
Created attachment 64704 [details, diff] Patch against more recent guide
Wokay, about time. This is the Final Call for Flight BT007 to /doc/en from /doc/en/draft. All passengers are requested to proceed to the plane immediately. Laggers will be b00ted :p I've just commited a "final" version. Barring further comments, this will go live by say Wednesday latest.
(In reply to comment #20) > /usr/bin/bluepin does not work - it does evil things with regards to setting the > XAUTHORITY environment variable Agreed and I've even removed references to it from the doc. BTW, Where exactly does hcid.conf play a role? I'm able to validate my BT device using both /etc/bluetooth/pin_helper and /usr/bin/bluepin (although the latter fails with an ERR when run alone) in the hcid.conf file.
Fixed, Guide is now in cvs. Thanks everyone.
