Recently ran emerge sync && emerge -u system && emerge -u world and picked up a large number of updated and new packages. I left default /etc/conf files as provided unless I had mods in my prior default /etc/conf files (of which there were very few). Picked up latest 2.6.12-gentoo kernel along the way and compiled it up using my standard .config setup that's been working fine. Then rebooted my box and left with very primitive logon screen (xdm?). When I logged in I was setup with very primitive twm window manager. How/what config broke my xdm->alias-to->gdm setup? I tried rebooting using last stable kernel and still came to xdm instead of gdm. So kernel recompile's not the problem. Might be nice if at your web site up high there was a link to "there lie danger!" to recent gotchas in the emerges. I'll try emerge -C xdm and also look around for the alias that decides to pick up whatever logon manager, etc. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. you probably overwrote your gdm setting in a conf file. ( probably rc.conf ) Check your setting at the bottom of that file.
I assume you can close this bug. rc.conf had DISPLAYMANAGER commented out. I did not do that in the past year. Possibly rc.conf was updated and the update had DISPLAYMANAGER commented out and I didn't catch that change. In any case I've edited rc.conf and all is well. Thanks.
