Emerge sys-apps/usbutils fails in 2005.0 universal livecd system installation from stage2 athlon-xp tarball baseline. Work-around found that builds usbtuils without error. Enable ~x86 usbutils package and emerge usbutils. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot from 2005.0 universal livecd and install stage2 tarball for athlon-xp to newly created filesystem. 2. Modifed /etc/make.conf to add use flags. 3. emerge sync ; emerge -vep system 4. emerge lshw pciutils usbutils Actual Results: Emerge error message follows: [...] gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -c lsusb.c gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -c names.c gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -c devtree.c gcc -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -o lsusb lsusb.o names.o devtree.o /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.5-20050130/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld:names.o: file format not recognized; treating as linker script /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.5-20050130/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld:names.o:1: syntax error collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [lsusb] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/usbutils-0.11-r5/work/usbutils-0.11' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/usbutils-0.11-r5/work/usbutils-0.11' make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2 !!! you should post `emerge info` not some ghetto cut & paste of config files
Could you post /var/tmp/portage/usbutils-0.11-r5/work/usbutils-0.11/names.o here? Does your cut'n paste lack -o XXX.o on each gcc line?

Looks like disk corruption .. Mike?
looks that way to me too
Howard, have you tried to run a full fsck on the disk that host PORTAGE_TMPDIR yet? And maybe a few hours of memtest as well.
