After fully updating my system with "emerge world" (previously a 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 w/ splashutils 1.1.9.5 system) to 2.6.12-gentoo-r4, I cannot emerge the latest splashutils (1.1.9.7), as it fails on linking, complaining about an undefined reference to 'boot_message'. Splashutils-1.1.9.6-r1 emerges fine, but does not appear to work, either generating bad initrd images or causing major errors in "make menuconfig" (see URL for details). I have not as of yet tried reverting to splashutils-1.1.9.5, but that will be my next step. I have (of course) added the appropriate lines to packages.unmask and packages.keywords to gain access to the recent splashutils releases, since last I checked only the 0.9 series was officially available. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge splashutils No, really, that's about it. Actual Results: After compiling all of the various .o files, it appeared to fail on linking the final splashutils.o file (forgive my lack of familiarity with gcc). Expected Results: Compiled/linked. The rest of the errors we'll sort out later. (Reverted to 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 for the meantime; splashutils disabled) $ emerge info Portage 2.0.51.22-r1 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.5-20050130, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 i686) =============================================================== == System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) Gentoo Base System version 1.6.12 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.10 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.5 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.18-r1 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/ qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/ gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j4" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 alsa apm avi berkdb crypt cups emboss encode foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gpm imlib ipv6 jpeg libg++ libwww mad mikmod mp3 mpeg ncurses nls ogg oggvorbis oss pam pdflib perl png python quicktime readline samba spell ssl svga tcpd tiff vorbis xml2 xv zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
Thanks for the bug report. I've got the issue fixed in my splashutils svn repository. Until 1.1.9.7-r1 or 1.1.9.8 are released, try adding 'truetype' to your USE flags -- this should make splashutils compile properly.
This solved the problem - thanks for the quick response! Should this be marked as "fixed" or not, since there is a workaround but the bug is still present?
I think it's better to leave it open until the next version of splashutils is released and put into Portage.
USE="truetype" emerge splashutils will allow the install
Fixed in 1.1.9.8.
