After a current emerge -uD world, using kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r4, a fresh reboot shows a clean log. Starting KDE 3.4 with only a root shell as application, twice a second th following log message appears: "Jul 11 14:46:48 jumbo Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive." Looking into konqueror, I discovered that one of my SCSI CD-ROM is interpreted as a disk ?! - the oters are fine. 4. Check /var/log/messages again: entries twice a second. /etc/fstab: ... /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro,user, exec 0 0 ... /dev/cdreader /mnt/cdreader iso9660 noauto,ro,user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrecorder /mnt/cdrecorder iso9660 noauto,rw,user, exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd iso9660 noauto,ro,user, exec 0 0 ... Only "cdreader" is mis-interpreted als "Festplatte" == "disk" in the konqueror devices list "media:\" Checking /dev and especially /dev/ide and /dev/media, all devices are correctly identified as CD-ROM, CD-RW and TAPE resp. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.boot - login as root. 2.Check /var/log/messages: clean. 3.Start KDE 3.4. Actual Results: 4. Check /var/log/messages again: You will discover the error message entries twice a second: "... Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive." Expected Results: No Error messages in /var/log/messages. Konqueror should correctly identify the device as CD-ROM, not as DISK. The device type is correct?
Excluding the wrong identification of the CD (which seems a separate issue) this problem was already reported, you can comment here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107153 I don't think we can do much for it, apart from suggesting to disable the the KDED Media Manager or recompile kdebase with USE="hal". (Also, I don't know why they say the message shouldn't appear with some kernels, the message surely is there in a vanilla 2.6.12 kernel...)
