Description Emmanuel Rosa 2005-07-09 13:08:32 UTC
When shutting down Gentoo-Linux while running ck-sources-2.6.12_p3, the kernel
segfaults when it tries to powerdown. I'm using the same configuration from
ck-sources-2.6.12_p2. I tried recompiling sysvinit, hoping /sbin/halt needed to
be recompiled against the new kernel, but the result was the same.
ck-sources-2.6.12_p2 works just fine.

sysvinit-2.86
baselayout-1.11.12-r4

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot Linux with the ck-sources-2.6.12_p3
2.Shutdown Linux.

Actual Results:
The kernel segfaults, showing stack and register information, like any other
kernel oops.

Expected Results:
Powered down the computer.

Comment 1 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-09 14:35:19 UTC
Would it be at all possible to capture the output of the oops? Either via a
digital camera or a serial console to another computer? Does this happen on a
vanilla 2.6.12.2 kernel? I'll try kicking my box a couple times to see if
anything happens for me, does the oops happen before or after the "Powering
down" message would appear?
Comment 2 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-09 15:09:36 UTC
I can't reproduce it, could you attach your kernel config?
Comment 3 Emmanuel Rosa 2005-07-09 15:13:59 UTC
I can't believe I didn't even think about using my camera! Here are two pics
showing the oops.
http://www.geocities.com/linuxisthebest2003/img/kerneloops-01.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/linuxisthebest2003/img/kerneloops-02.jpg
Sorry, the second is a tad blurry. And as you can see, there's no powering down
message. The at76* modules are for my USB nic card: http://at76c503a.berlios.de/
I compile those in manually, no ebuild.
I don't use vanilla, so I don't know if it's affected. And I don't recommend
kicking your computer. Unless it's Windows that's causing the trouble. If that's
the case, beat it with a bat!

Here's my kernel config. Sorry, I meant to do that to begin with:

Comment 4 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-09 15:27:16 UTC
Since it dies when dealing with the disk, try using antisipitory scheduler
instead of cfq (which looks to be the only relivant change in ck3). To do this
add elevator=as to your kernel parameters.
Comment 5 Emmanuel Rosa 2005-07-09 15:32:54 UTC
Not too long ago, the elevator flag became useless. Now, the scheduler is
selected using sysfs.
$ cat /sys/block/hda/queue/scheduler
noop [anticipatory] deadline cfq

What I've been doing is setting the scheduler to anticipatory using a homemade
init script that runs on boot. This is until a utility similar to sysctl comes
out for sysfs.

I knew about the sys interface, but I didn't know the elevator option was
disabled... :-/

so does the oops happen on both as and cfq then?
Comment 7 Emmanuel Rosa 2005-07-10 08:07:48 UTC
Nope, only on anticipatory. I just tried cfq and it shutdown! I guess I should
switch back to cfq then. That would only be a work-around though, hot a fix, haha.
Comment 8 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-26 01:47:00 UTC
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you for a while in this. I have never been able
to reproduce it. :-/

If you have the time please post your your problem to the ck mailing list (there
is a link on the patch's website
http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/). Hopefully someone there will
be able to make a guess at what is going on. I'm not familiar with the code to
help much when I don't have the issue itself to play with. If a solution is
found please post it back to this bug.

Good luck.
Comment 9 Emmanuel Rosa 2005-07-26 12:40:37 UTC
No problem, I've been using the cfq scheduler to avoid the problem. As you
recommemded, I posted the bug on the ck kernel mailing list:
http://bhhdoa.org.au/mailman/listinfo/ck

I don't know kernel code either, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Comment 10 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-27 07:08:13 UTC
As pointed out on the list, ck-sources includes genpatches, but I forgot to ask
you to try a clean ck tree. oops. Could you roll a kernel yourself with only ck
patched in and confirm that this is a ck issue and not genpatches? Thanks :-P
Comment 11 Emmanuel Rosa 2005-07-27 16:44:49 UTC
As you'll see in the mailing list, I tried the pain kernel source
(vanialla-sources) with the ck patch. I managed to get the kernel oops.

I'm really impressed with the developers. They jumped right in on it. I had 11
emails waiting for me! If I had known so many people were going to look at
pictures of my computer monitor, I would have tried to get better pics. Maybe I
should have put Lucy Liu in there somehow :)
Comment 12 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-06 12:17:36 UTC
Have you tried the most recent ck patch for 2.6.13-rc?

Comment 13 Emmanuel Rosa 2005-08-06 17:06:55 UTC
No, not yet. I don't even see ck-sources-2.6.13 in portage. Do you think .13
fixes it? I guess I could download the vanilla sources and patch with ck manually.
Comment 14 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-16 17:12:37 UTC

Sorry for not seeing this, I don't put the ck patches for rc kernels in the tree
so you will have to patch it yourself. I don't know if 2.6.13 will help, but
maybe we will be lucky.
Comment 15 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-23 05:20:17 UTC
Obsolete kernel version; also ck-sources is not a supported kernel on Gentoo.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-kernel.xml#doc_chap3

If the problem persists w/ uptodate versions, file a bug upstream.
