Please test the prereleases which reside in pitr:/releases/2005.1/ These files are part of the prerelease up to the moment: 1ebd76508d6123fde62c5055b21a5b96 install-amd64-2005.1-pre1.iso b1b8912de53d20b6afa0e383685f8e71 stage1-amd64-2005.1-pre1.tar.bz2 688bf15e443c7aec4d1387c9a1a90982 stage2-amd64-2005.1-pre1.tar.bz2 b468417be8eef5c358c18aee66f72d16 stage3-amd64-2005.1-pre1.tar.bz2 6cb551497562cb274b758e1f93549144 stage3-amd64-2005.1-seed.tar.bz2 Before you reply to this bug, please check that your file matches the md5sum that i gave here. Please _don't comment_, if your stage is outdated. Instead, try to recreate your problem with the latest version. Thank you! I'd like to get checks on these facts: o installcd boots on AMD _and_ Intel CPUs (Astinus and other em64t devs: please test!) o installcd has no problems with SMP systems (cparrot, could you try to boot it on one of your bigger SMP boxes?) o stage1-3: work fine with an empty /etc/make.conf:USE o stage1-3: work fine with your main boxes' USE (Come on people, get creative ;-) ) Thank you for testing! :-)
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but with stage1 bootstrap: [[ (3/3) Emerging packages ]] Calculating dependencies / !!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "virtual/libc" have been masked. !!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request: - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20041102 (masked by: profile) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1 (masked by: profile) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5.20050421 (masked by: package.mask, -* keyword) # Martin Schlemmer <azarah@gentoo.org> (23 Apr 2005) # Testing release for gcc-4.0.0. - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.3.20040420-r2 (masked by: profile, missing keyword) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20050125 (masked by: profile, ~amd64 keyword) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2-r12 (masked by: profile) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20040619-r2 (masked by: profile) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1 (masked by: profile) - sys-libs/glibc-2.2.5-r10 (masked by: profile, missing keyword) - sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20050125-r1 (masked by: profile, ~amd64 keyword) For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or section 2.2 "Software Availability" in the Gentoo Handbook. make.conf edited to use -O0 and added nptl use flags. Also, when I try to bootstrap again, it thinks that the bootstrapping is done (since I ran another emerge, it probably cleared the resume data). How can I reset this?
I'm sorry, I will add my portage-snapshot to the release directory. You have to use that one instead of the livetree.
Ok, a new set of stages and a new installcd just arrived in /releases/2005.1-pre2/: ac0f96edc6430338770724c5e3650301 install-amd64-2005.1-pre2.iso fbfd04ae131ec83c87800abf2211eaea stage1-amd64-2005.1-pre2.tar.bz2 e128ab76dc8fefdd7ec1e4645309813d stage2-amd64-2005.1-pre2.tar.bz2 6cb551497562cb274b758e1f93549144 stage3-amd64-2005.0.tar.bz2 48b3887b9f125524ea4e74a0fa16edbe stage3-amd64-2005.1-pre2.tar.bz2 Please double check that you are using the latest versions before your report anything. Thanks!
Rebuild the installcd now with one of Tim's patches. Mike, thx for finding this! New md5sum: 6a97d9cc265eac0d49a691851ee407bd install-amd64-2005.1-pre2.iso cparrott: Can you please test this again on your SMP DC box? TIA!
I will try to get to this as soon as I can. Things are a little busier than usual around our lab this week, so it may take me a bit longer than usual. I shall report my findings here.
OK, I tested this on two different dual-core boxes with mixed results: Candidate #1: IBM eSeries 326 with 2 Opteron 880 (2.4 GHz dual-core) CPUs Seems to work fine. Kernel boots and enumerates all 4 cores. CD successfully mounts, detects hardware, and drops to the usual livecd prompt where installation can begin. Candidate #2: Celestica "Serenade" reference board with 4 Opteron 875 (2.2 GHz dual-core) CPUs Has problems. Kernel boots and enumerates all 8 cores. Init does not successfully detect the CD drive to mount the CD image from, and continue booting. The sequence is roughly as follows: Initializing /tmproot Attempting to mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 Attempting to mount /dev/hda The last two lines are repeated a couple of times, before the failure prompt appears. Dropping into a shell and attempting to mount the CD manually results in an "Invalid argument" error from the system. The system contains 3 SCSI disks, and an IDE CD-ROM drive. In short, I don't think this is specifically a dual-core problem. I think it is more likely related to this particular motherboard or system configuration in some way. Please let me know if you need any additional information on this.

I did a full install from stage3 with -pre3, and it worked without any problems. I have a compaq v2000z turion laptop that's so new most of it's hardware doesn't have lspci output.
