If you use a non-English UTF-8 LANG such as German on your Gentoo box together with some FAT32 devices (most mass storage devices are FAT32) the file names will not display correct (e.g. German umlauts missing). The UTF-8 on Gentoo Guide should cover some additional steps to make FAT32 work properly on UTF-8 enabled systems. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.mount a fat device, e.g. USB mass storage mp3 player 2.look for some files with "spezial chars" as e.g. German umlauts 3.They are missing and substituted by sqares Actual Results: File names are partly destroyed Expected Results: Show the file names on FAT devices correctly I wrote down the steps to get it working on: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-355426.html
Created attachment 62559 [details, diff] utf-8.xml.diff My attempt to include the missing information.
Thanks for the patch Marcelo, I've removed the spelling corrections as they're all correct British spellings. I also added a wee bit more info. Changes are in CVS.
