You won't have much luck when mounting devices with invalid filesystem. I can't see any errors about the USB stick. Also, emerge --info missing, so we don't know which kernel are you using, udev version missing as well. Reopen once you've posted the needed information.

(In reply to comment #2) > The file system is not invalid, the stick as well as the iPod work perfectly > under Windows XP and always have. That's not really a proof of filesystem consistency; I know very well myself.
How are you trying to mount the device? What exactly did you type to mount it? Have you mounted the devices previously? Do you have the proper filesystem modules loaded?
The USB stick is new and hence did not work before. Well, I just took a shot just now and am somewhat confused: I have the same logs on my SuSE 9.3 machine. However I was able to format it with VFAT, manually (opposed to subfs) it and write onto the stick. When I re-plugged in the stick I still had the same logs. When I plugged the stick in my gentoo notebook I also got the logs but were unable to mount the stick. I formatted it with ext3 but was still unable to mount it. ??? Regarding the iPod: yes, this one worked before. Currently I do not even see loggings when I plug it (?) and this applies to both of my machines so this is propably a kernel rather than a distribution bug.
You did not answer my questions, please do. Also, can you enable CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG and attach the logs for when you try to mount the device?
- the file system driver are built-in - mount /dev/sda1 /mnt, mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt
Also, please note that I get this before mounting/doing anything, just plugging the device. I once had very similar logs for my iPod on SuSE 9.2 and this actually *was* a bug that was fixed after a while. This is the USB stick, for the iPod I don't get any logs at all: Jul 4 21:42:24 notebook usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3 Jul 4 21:42:24 notebook scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Jul 4 21:42:24 notebook usb-storage: device found at 3 Jul 4 21:42:24 notebook usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Jul 4 21:42:29 notebook Vendor: LG Model: USB DRIVE Rev: 2.00 Jul 4 21:42:29 notebook Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Jul 4 21:42:29 notebook sda: Unit Not Ready, sense: Jul 4 21:42:29 notebook : Current: sense key=0x6 Jul 4 21:42:29 notebook ASC=0x28 ASCQ=0x0 Jul 4 21:42:29 notebook sda : READ CAPACITY failed. Did you try just mounting "sda"? Also, you can still enable the CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG option, if you have stuff built into your kernel. Either way, this is an upstream issue, please open a bug at bugzilla.kernel.org for it and they will help you out there.
