Description Forza 2005-06-30 10:15:34 UTC
I'd like to propose that Gentoo.org enable access to their websites over IPv6 in addition
to IPv4.

IPv6 development has reached far. There is quite many applications that support IPv6,
as well as many/most system tools. Gentoo Linux itself has great support for IPv6 too.
There are various guides in the Gentoo documentation and forums on how to get
access to the IPv6 Internet.

The greatest challenge IPv6 has to overcome today is the Catch-22. Websites do not
want to implement IPv6 support because there are not many IPv6 users. At the same
time do ISPs not want to give users IPv6 access because there are so few websites and
web services that offer access over IPv6.

Gentoo is a leading edge Linux distribution. I think that it would be fitting for Gentoo to
provide IPv6 access to gentoo.org, forums.gentoo.org, bugzilla and other services.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

I started this proposal by writing a GLEP. However, as I do not have any information
about Gentoos internal structures and network it would be better for someone with
more in-depth knowledge to provide additional information and comments. Please see
the attachment.

I will be happy to receive any comments, thoughts or other input and will incorporate it
into this GLEP draft. Hopefully it will lead to something good.

We'd love to provide access to our various services over IPv6. Because we rely
on donated bandwidth and hosting, we don't have direct control over our network,
however.

We have and will continue to actively seek IPv6 hosting sponsors. If you know
of any companies willing to provide these services, please have them contact me
directly.

Closing as later.

Unfortunately I do not know of a ISP that would natively be able to provide IPv6 access.
However, I am reasonably sure that you could use one of the many IPv6 tunnel
providers. One of them is SiXS (http://www.sixxs.net).

This is a quote from their website:

"SixXS (Six Access) is a free, non-profit, non-cost service for Local Internet Registries
(LIR's). The main target is to create a common portal to help company engineers find
their way with IPv6 networks deploying IPv6 to their customers in a rapid and
controllable fashion."

Perhaps you can contact them for more information. As far as I understand they
provide IPv6 access for free to both end users and companies.

The contact page for SiXS is https://noc.sixxs.net/contact/ They request that all contact
with them is done through info <at> sixxs.net.

If you guys like I can try to contact them myself and present my case. However, I do
not have any information about Gentoo networks and current ISP. It would probably be
a lot better if someone from Gentoo did this. Please let me know.
