If you emerge Mail-SpamAssassin-2.31-r3.ebuild first, then the 2.43 will 
emerge without any trouble.

-r1 is in portage. Added more lines to myconf so that it would build in the
sandbox and then install correctly (see the top of the Makefile.PL for notes)

I would only be able to test this by installing on a virgin 1.4 system, which I 
don't have.  As far as I am concerned, this can be closed, as it appears 
correct.
