Have you tried the advices here?
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99911
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97139

Have you tried recompiling cyrus-sasl, to make sure the libraries
in /usr/lib/sasl2 do not have broken dependencies?

I have at least one email account using tls+plain and it works absolutely fine.
Just ssl/cram-md5 will never be fixed as it seems.

>i have all cyrus-sasl packages installed..

What do you mean with all? The existing versions are all in the same slot, so
you should have exactly one version installed.

Is this still a problem for you with KDE 3.5.2?

Well I dunno about the original poster but I just started noticing this in my Kmail 3.5.3 Not sure what broke this since its been a couple of weeks and several updates since my last mail sent out using Gmail with Kmail.

I just updated from kde-3.5.3 to 3.5.4, and now I cant send mail using TLS+PLAIN. I didn't have problems before this update, and haven't changed any configs. I get a different error message than the original poster:

Sending failed:
The attempt to start sending the message content failed. The server responded: "5.0.0 Need RCPT (recipient)"

I've tried remerging cyrus-sasl and kmail. revdep-rebuild didn't identify any problems.

I don't know what happened, but suddenly things are working again. Sorry for the noise. I think maybe I had a corrupted message at the top of the outgoing que.
