media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.7664 and media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.7664 emerge without problem on my system. However when I 'startx', XWindows does not start and I receive the following on the console: ... This did not affect the outcome. media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174 and media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-r4 work well on my system and do not have the above problem. I have almost the same problem with nvidia-kernel 7667. One difference: I can successfully 'startx' once. After that, on subsequent 'startx' tries I receive the same: (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. ls -l /dev/nvidia* shows: crw-rw-rw- 1 root video 195, 0 Jun 25 16:03 /dev/nvidia0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root video 195, 255 Jun 25 16:03 /dev/nvidiactl I can NOT get startx (or xdm) to start Xwindows again untill a reboot. Then I can get one startx. I have attached a complete Xorg.0.log. Also after reverting to nvidia-kernel 7174 everything works well: multiple startx work as does xdm.
Created attachment 63194 [details] Xorg.0.log from an unsuccessful startx using nvidia-kernel 7667
How does 7676-r1 work for you?
Switching to nvidia-kernel-1.0.8174-r1 (nvidia-glx-1.0.8174-r1) seems to have fixed this issue. I am also now using a vanilla-sources-2.6.14.4 kernel.
Please open this bug again, because this is still an issue for 6629-r4 users.
Why are you still using 6629-r4?
