I am not the only one with this problem, for a good description see here http://forums.gentoo.org/ viewtopic-t-338235-highlight-gnomemixerapplet.html "I upgraded to Gnome 2.10, everything went smoothly. But when I logged in, it said something along with: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration? Okej, I thought. I delete it and then readd it, and things will be dandy. I right click the panel, then I choose Add to panel, but there was no Sound control applet, no mixer applet, no kind of sound applet at all. The sound works fine, and every other applet too. But the mixer applet is nowhere to be found. I have searched the gentoo forum, and I have googled, it turned up nothing that helped me. "the default package-specific USE Flags for "gnome" should include the "gstreamer" Flag." - afaics gstreamer is in base profile. The fact that the mixer doesn't work or that it shows in the USE=-gstreamer case is a bug however.
USE=gstreamer isn't in base, default-linux, nor x86's make.defaults and nobody told me that it would need to be there, so I never added it. This will probably bite us on 2005.1, too, since it wasn't in the profile when we built GRP.
this should be fixed now.
No.... it is not resolved until we have a non-broken release.
Fixed now that 2006.0 is out the door. Thanks guys. =]
