This has been reported in #82630 also (resolved invalid). I would like to add that XFCE4 uses ~/.config/xfce* to store its settings. Installing KDE on such a system breaks the KDE menu's and kcontrolcenter. (No menu items, no panel icons, no menu in kcontrol). deleting .config solves this problem. (surprising as kde is not using .config now) It would be nice if the ebuild printed a warning to this effect asking the user to delete ~/.config. I spent many hours figuring out what was causing problems Thanks. And sorry if this was not the correct place to report this bug. Please let me know what is the correct place and I will correct the mistake. Thanks Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. rm -rf .kde* .config* 2. run XFCE4 3. run KDE Actual Results: no menu entries, no panel icons, no entries in kcontrol KDE 3.3.2 $ emerge info Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.5-20050130, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r11 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r11 i686 Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 - M CPU 2.00GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.6.12 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.5 [2.3.5 (#1, Jun 12 2005, 18:59:02)] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5 sys-apps/sandbox: [Not Present] sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r6, 2.13 sys-devel/automake: 1.9.5, 1.7.9-r1, 1.5, 1.4_p6, 1.6.3, 1.8.5-r3 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.16 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -pipe -O2 -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer -frename-registers" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -pipe -O2 -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer -frename-registers" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://open-systems.ufl.edu/mirrors/gentoo http://adelie.polymtl.ca/ ftp://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/ http://gentoo.osuosl.org/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X acpi alsa arts bitmap-fonts caps cdr crypt cups curl dbus dvdr emacsencode fam flac foomaticdb fortran gd gif gpm gtk2 hal imap imlib jpeg kde ldaplibwww mad mikmod mmap mmx motif mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nptl offensive ogg oggvorbis opengl pam pcmcia pdflib png qt quicktime readline sdl spell sse sse2 ssl tcpd tetex tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts vorbis wifi xml2 xv zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
heh, this bug is sitting a while... No idea about this and I definitely won't install Xfce to reproduce. Is this still an issue for you, Nikhil?

(In reply to comment #2) > No idea :) I havn't had KDE on my system for a long time now. *Compiling* and > running KDE is even less appealing to me than installing XFCE is for you! "O.k." - haven't a clue about this weird problem, we've more pressing bugs and you're oviously not interested anymore.
I was hit by this bug after: 1) Upgrade my AMD64 box from KDE-3.5.9 to the recently stabilized KDE-3.5.10. 2) Install and try XFCE for the first time in my life (always a KDE user before). 3) After playing a bit with xfce and going back to KDE, K Menu was all messed up, K menu entry "menu editor" did nothing after being clicked on and kcontrol showed no control panels at all. 4) Running "kbuildsycoca -noincremental" from within the messed-up KDE session as my normal user FIXED the issues. So, I think something must be done about it.
Wow, this is a OLD bug. I no longer have easy access to a box where I can try to reproduce this bug. Sorry that I can not help you further, and appreciate that someone did finally look at it!
