After removing the local used USEW flag 'sasl' ufed removed the [X] but left the
'+' as seen in attachment #1 [details]

That's not a bug. The + means that currently, that flag is enabled (yes, it's
true that ufed doesn't take modifications to /etc/make.conf while it's running
into account). The cleared X means that that flag will be disabled after saving.
make.conf isn't updated until after you choose to save.

If you feel this is not clear enough, I'm willing to update the documentation if
you can suggest improved wording, though.
