German localistation works. äöü shows up, but some strings seems to be cut off. While using LANG=ja_JP some strings are shown in English, the rest is completly broken and not readable. (Not readable means somethings else than Katakana, Hiragana or Kanji. ;)) Maybe, this is something for the fluxbox people?! (The other utf8 stuff works fine on my gentoo box.) This isn't about gdm, it's about the menu encoding. I think the menu is encoded in euc-jp or some such. Here's a quick way to get around it: emerge nkf ; cd ~/.fluxbox ; cp menu menu.old ; nkf -w menu.old > menu ; rm menu.old profit!
Thnx about the nkf hint, but this isn't the deal. I figured out, that the internal fluxbox message strings are within "/usr/share/fluxbox/nls/" "strings /usr/share/fluxbox/nls/de_DE/fluxbox.cat" has quite some messages. But "/usr/share/fluxbox/nls/ja_JP/fluxbox.cat" doesn't seem to contain "much" usefull... This is nothing gentoo can deal with directly.
I am using the japanese translation of fluxbox and when I switched from EUC-JP to UTF-8 encoding I had the same problem. Fluxbox expects the translations to be in the same encoding as the locale (LC_ALL) in which it was started. Thus, when starting fluxbox with LC_ALL="*_*.UTF-8" the translations have to be coded in UTF-8. Easy solution (I use it): Before running the configure script execute the following bash magic in the fluxbox source directory: for i in `ls -d nls/*_*`; do sed -e "1s/=.*$/=UTF-8/" < $i/Translation.m | iconv -f `head -n 1 $i/Translation.m | sed -e "s/^.*=//"` -t UTF-8 > $i/Translation.m ; done This will convert all translations (except C) to UTF-8. Then just compile as usual. Perhaps someone (hint hint) can put this into an ebuild (possibly using an additional use flag like utf8 or unicode).

I made that ebuild with your code - which will realy change that problem! ;). I added the useflag/keyword "utf8" wich would be the best (in my eyes) way to choose UTF-8 instead of ISO-8859-1. Thanks for your code Jan Pauli - let's hope that the maintainer(s) will agree with us and do add my/your ebuild-with-useflag/code to portage!
