When I follow the guidlines in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/printing-howto.html (but without the gnome-thing, blackbox rules :-) I can't configure cups. I use the interactive thing (http://localhost:631) and choose "Add Printer", then I type ind the name of the printer (and yes... I use the correct name), then I choose Parallel Port #1 (because my HP Laserjet 4 Plus is connected to /dev/lp0), next I choose HP as Make. Next I have to choose the model, and there are numerous choosies, and I choose "HP Laserjet 4 series, CUPS+GIMP-print 4.3.0 (en)". Here the troubles begin, when I presse the Continue button I get the following error: "Error: client-error-not-authorized"
client-error-not-authorized == wrong driver
I think it's an honest-to-goodness bug. According to the cups mailing list the problem is fixed in the cups cvs.
I just installed the CVS version, and the "client-error-not-authorized" message has gone away. Unfortunately, I do not know what the actual problem w/ 1.1.16 is, which makes it darn hard to fix it.
I put a masked version of today's cvs version of cups into portage. I believe the tarball I uploaded should arrive on ibiblio by 4pm EDT.
