There's a lot of potential information to supply...
I've installed ivtv for my hauppauge pvr-350 card and it seems to be working fine. at least "mplayer /dev/video0" works fine, and I can change channels with ptune.
Mythbackend runs fine, and mysql is configured properly. I guess the thing to do is post what happens....

If I run mythfrontend-->watch tv, I get scrolling output and tv never starts:

Try with CFLAGS=""

Does this happen if you don't use the pvr-350's output?

How are you using the 350's output? Via the ivtvdev X driver? Via mythtv's
built-in support for it?

Okay,
I don't have any other display devices except my monitor, which is hooked by vga
to my nvidia card. No television. Nothing else. I'm hoping to just display
television in a window on my desktop. It appears to start because a black window
appears, but then disappears quickly, throwing the errors above. I have:

I think it's fixed.

For those who stumble across this later, installing on this dual opteron system
required editing ivtv-driver.c as described here:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-259241-highlight-ivtv.html

I also emerged tons of myth plugins and also upgraded to version
media-tv/mythtv-0.18.1-r2.

So far it's working....now for the remote.
