media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 doesn't work in svga console (USE="svga") with media-libs/libsdl-1.2.8-r1 (but it does with 1.2.7, after downgrading I've fixed the problem). In fact, when playing video in the svga mode it hangs the computer and the screen fills with strange colors. The same thing happened with mplayer-1.0_pre5 (so it seems to be an sdl-related problem) I'm using linux-2.6.11.11. My svga card identifies itself as 0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. ProSavage KM133 (rev 03) (with lspci) Under X (xorg-x11-6.8.99.8) however, mplayer works fine. (with savage driver) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
I've tried libsdl-1.2.9-r1 and it doesn't work either. (with kernel 2.6.13.3). So I think that libsdl-1.2.7-r3 is still the best version available of libsdl (and should be the stable one)
I've only had one problem with SDL 1.2.8-r1 but it does seem to be the same one. I can't afford the risk of downtime inherent in testing with SDL 1.2.7. When I tried to use "-vo sdl" in mplayer, it blanked the display and locked up the keyboard so badly that the only way to get it back was to SSH in and reboot. restarting X did nothing although I forgot to try the "nv" drivers which have helped to reset the card when buggy "nvidia" drivers lock it. There was also no help to be gained from trying the other console drivers for mplayer although I did notice that fbdev and fbdev2 could output normally. I'm not sure whether it's related, but "shutdown -r now", "init 6", and "telinit 6" had no effect so I ended up having to manually stop all services except net.eth0 and sshd and then run "shutdown -nr now".
Other applications other than mplayer doesn't work for me with libsdl-1.2.8 or 1.2.10 (I've tried to run frozen bubble in svga mode) I'm using svglib-1.9.24
Really old versions ... reopen if still an issue with latest app/drivers
