Description davidf4 2025-05-26 23:49:55 UTC
When attempting to compile the Breeze-icons 6.13.0 and 6.14.0 on an x86 VM with any amount of RAM, XOSVIEW shows the memory jumping up to 3.7G allocated and then the compile fails at this command with "cannot allocate memory". I've tried adding memory to the VM and the OS sees it but apparently there is a hard coded limit someplace of 4G (yes, I know that's all 32 bit is supposed to be able to see...)

6.12 may have had the same issue per this forum thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8855770.html?sid=1e08136b3f4b8ab1de7d20abd181c743

I did have KDE 5.116.0 installed and, since my KDE is all messed up with half at 6 and half at 5, I'd love to go back to 5 for now but the ebuild was dropped.

The simplest solution for now, while someone with more ebuild knowledge than I have researches things is to request that the final version 5 ebuild for x86 be restored for now if at all possible.

Here's a failed 6.13 compile attempt:

I understand the request, but it's not a simple one ;)

Can you include the full buld.log and emerge --info please?

I did drop the memory back down to just 4G so that's what emerge --info shows.

Comment 6 davidf4 2025-05-27 13:47:39 UTC
It appears to be a GCC issue. CLANG compiles it even with low memory.
I used this command line (env vars taken from https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/LLVM/Clang) and both 6.13 and 6.14 compiled.

CC="clang" CXX="clang++" CPP="clang-cpp" AR="llvm-ar" NM="llvm-nm" RANLIB="llvm-ranlib" MAKEOPTS="-j1 -l4" emerge -av breeze-icons

I compiled 6.13 with 16G RAM and 6.14 with 2G.

6.13 did get up to about 3.1G allocated during the worst part. 6.14 did go to swap but soldiered through. The minimum requirements appear to be ~5G total RAM+SWAP.

On the KDE bug, someone said Clang failed for them, so that's interesting. It's possible they made recent improvements.

I'd also be curious if GCC 15 is better. It made a lot of changes here in preparation for #embed. See https://developers.redhat.com/articles/2025/01/30/how-implement-c23-embed-gcc-15.
