Ever since two minor updates of all the KDE stuff ago, Dolphin does not show any new thumbnails anymore. It creates the directories for it (.cache/thumbnails/*), but does not generate the actual files. Thumbnails are turned on in the View menu. All formats seem to be affected (images, videos via kde-apps/thumbnailers[video], etc). Old thumbnails (existing files in .cache/thumbnails/*/) however, are displayed! And .local/share/sddm/xorg-session.log shows that the thumbnailer is executed. (E.g. when deleting .cache/thumbnails during running and using Dolphin, it complains that it cannot access it anymore.) So it is not Dolphin. But the thumbnailer facility itself. With them all being affected, I doubt that it just the different specific generators, but the facility that sits between them and Dolphin. I do not see any way to run it manually or debug it. There seem to be only .so files. So at this point, I can only assume that it must be a bug. I do not know if it is only the case here, or if others can reproduce it. So I’m opening this bug, to pin down the change that caused it, by comparing it to a working case. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Make sure all instance of Dolphin or other programs that might cause thumbnail generation are closed. 2. Delete .cache/thumbnails/* 3. Open Dolphin, navigate to a directory with pictures in it, switch the view to symbols (Ctrl+1), turn on the thumbnail display (F12), and make them as big as possible (using the slider at the bottom right of the window). Actual Results: The directories .cache/thumbnails/{xx-large,x-large,large,normal} now exist. But no thumbnails are visible in Dolphin. Expected Results: The thumbnails should be generated and visible as files in .cache/thumbnails/{xx-large,x-large,large,normal}, as well as in Dolphin. $ emerge --info kio-extras thumbnailers Why is your system in inconsistent upgrade state? On a ~amd64 system, there is no good reason for that: > kde-apps/kio-extras-25.04.1::gentoo > kde-apps/thumbnailers-25.04.0::gentoo > kde-apps/ffmpegthumbs-25.04.0::gentoo All of these should be at 25.04.1. That should not be fatal by itself, but could have you miss bug fixes - but also makes me wonder what other packages are in half upgrade state right now, before we even begin trying to understand your problem.
