I've been wondering about the extra tools we add in the ebuild from a Debian distfile for a while and https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1174060.html has prompted me to look further.

Do we really want to keep using these? If we do, we should be fetching from Debian's mirrors, not dead mirror://gentoo.
