Description useless 2025-04-08 17:08:05 UTC
when updating gentoo-kernel with USE=savedconfig the build fails on attempting to build drivers for hardware i do not own or have enabled in my kernel configuration at /etc/portage/savedconfig/sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel.

specifically disabling the affected hardware in my config, caused yet another seemingly random device to get set as =m and fail to build.

next, i copy my kernel config into the temporary build dir for the kernel and ran make oldconfig ...i was presented with numerous options for y/n/m including the affected hardware and of note, they were default =n.

not sure why they were getting enabled but after running make oldconfig and copy the temporary config back to my savedconfig dir, everything did build as expected.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.sync and update from gentoo-kernel 6.13.x to 6.14.x
2.observe build failure due to attempted building of un-needed module
3.find a way to run make oldconfig against your kernel config and substitute the resultant config
Actual Results:
build fails on seemingly random hardware modules that are not configured

Expected Results:
build should succeed

build log in url, sorry... i had already lost it since it was able to complete the build after running make oldconfig in the temporarily build directory

build log with failure

the build log from failed upgrade
Comment 5 Nowa Ammerlaan gentoo-dev 2025-04-08 17:59:06 UTC
I think this is the intended behaviour, config options not set in the savedconfig take their default from the Gentoo/Fedora config (not the upstream default). Hence whatever is not explicitly disabled, might end up being enabled.
Comment 6 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2025-04-08 18:07:46 UTC
I wouldn't expect that to lead to a build failure though, just extra modules being built (successfully).
Comment 7 useless 2025-04-13 15:41:21 UTC
of course the build failures are what brought it to my attention, but i would rather not have any modules built "behind my back"..i try to keep a tight .config, very few modules.
can we not just assume "no" to any new drivers? if i added any hardware..i'd seek out the driver.
Comment 8 Sam James archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2025-04-13 16:44:54 UTC
I think you really need to just regenerate the savedconfig on new major versions then. oldnoconfig or whatever the equivalent is these days would cause other problems. We can't read your mind in the ebuild.
