Description Jack Avery 2025-03-30 05:00:29 UTC
Attempting to emerge Thunar on a system using USE="-wayland" will fail.
As I understand it, xfce-base/thunar expects xfce-base/exo to be built with Wayland support.

xfce-base/exo and xfce-base/thunar have no "wayland" USE flag, and while xfce-base/exo will build fine without dev-libs/wayland present on the system, xfce-base/thunar will fail until xfce-base/exo is built with wayland support.

Ideally, USE flags for both of these packages are provided to maintain a fully USE="-wayland" system, but in the meantime, a tl;dr temp solution:

# manually build wayland dev libs and rebuild exo
emerge dev-libs/wayland
emerge xfce-base/exo
# thunar now builds correctly on your USE="-wayland" system
emerge xfce-base/thunar

There are three versions of thunar in the repo today, and we don't know when you last synced. The contents of 'emerge --info thunar' would answer both questions. :)

Hi Greg,

Apologies, first report here. Here's some of the output of emerge --info thunar on my system.
My account is new, and cannot post URLs, so I've culled a lot of this to what I *believe* is important.

xfce-base/thunar-4.20.1::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="pcre trash-panel-plugin -exif -introspection -libnotify -udisks" ABI_X86="(64)"
Comment 3 Michał Górny archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2025-03-30 12:28:54 UTC
I'm confused where this is coming from. Thunar definitely doesn't feature any references to wayland. exo seems to have an automagic dependency (which is definitely a bug), but FWIU it would only happen if you built GTK+ with USE=wayland.
Comment 4 Jack Avery 2025-03-30 21:34:20 UTC
I cannot seem to replicate this issue. I removed dev-libs/wayland (and a reverse dependency, being app-admin/bitwarden-desktop-bin), remerged xfce-base/exo, and remerged xfce-base/thunar expecting it to fail... but it didn't.
For additional context, before creating this issue, I was using FEATURES="${FEATURES} getbinpkg", and had this exact same issue, so I removed getbinpkg, called emerge -uDN @world, and remerged xfce-base/thunar, only to receive the same error.
I feel like this is probably something to do with binpkgs then, but I'm by no means educated with Portage, so take that with a grain of salt.
