I don't maintain this and was going to drive-by add ffmpeg-compat "for now", but this package seem to have other problems. It notably still uses gstreamer even with USE="-gstreamer ffmpeg": * VDB: detected possibly incorrect RDEPEND (app-misc/tracker-miners-3.6.2-r2) * > media-libs/gst-plugins-base:1.0 * > media-libs/gstreamer:1.0 ...and fails to build without it wrt bug #947635 (fails for me as well), meaning that you can't really avoid it. So I'd recommend to just keep (the default) USE=gstreamer enabled until this gets proper attention.
