This is practically a clone of the old bug #711288. Today I wanted to start my weekly upgrade session but it failed: ~> eix-sync * Starte emerge --sync >>> Syncing repository 'gentoo' into '/var/db/repos/gentoo'... * Using keys from /usr/share/openpgp-keys/gentoo-release.asc * Refreshing keys via WKD ... [ ok ] >>> Starting rsync with rsync://89.238.71.6/gentoo-portage... >>> Checking server timestamp ... rsync: did not see server greeting rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1850) [Receiver=3.3.0] ... Seems that it is a single point of failure. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. eix-sync Actual Results: It fails Expected Results: It works
Additional information: My sync is done with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage and the only fallback, a IPv6 is also failing. In my opinion, this dns entry should include more than just one server.
Hi, Normally we have multiple rsync servers, however the others had a failure, and we're waiting for the sponsor to respond - I'm hoping it's a hardware issue on their end and easy to remedy. There's too much load for the single remaining rsync server, hence the delays. If there is no response in the next 12 hours; I think we should create a new backup system anyway.
Alternatively you can use git to sync -> https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Portage_with_Git
I've reached out to some community mirror maintainers to ask for their consent to be added to the main rotation. One already replied in the affirmative, pushed that now.
