Version 3.8.8 was tagged on on Aug 11, 2024. It contains a fix for this annoying issue:
https://github.com/dabisu/sakura/issues/42

I copied the ebuild into a sakura-3.8.8.ebuild in a local overlay; no further changes were necessary. The one patch file still applies.
