Following the german Gentoo Install Handbook, when you reach the part of configuring the kernel, it tells you to enable /dev file system for 2.6 kernel When booting the resulting kernel, /dev is (reportedly) missing (e.g.) hdX (probably because devfsd is not started for 2.6?) Compare the following excerpts: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7 (With a 2.6.x kernel) File systems ---> Pseudo Filesystems ---> [*] /proc file system support [ ] /dev file system support (OBSOLETE) [*] Virtual memory file system support (former shm fs) http://www.gentoo.org/doc/de/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7 (Mit einem 2.6.x Kernel) File systems ---> Pseudo Filesystems ---> [*] /proc file system support [*] /dev file system support (OBSOLETE) [*] Automatically mount at boot [*] /dev/pts file system for Unix98 PTYs [*] Virtual memory file system support (former shm fs) Seems like the 2.4 section was simply duplicated for 2.6 which is obviously wrong. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Follow the handbook 2. 3.
