Description Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-28 07:48:59 UTC
the jvm in blackdown-jdk seems to crash firefox and mozilla when going to certain java enables sites. I've had both luckyduck and hparker confirm this on amd64, as well as confirm that it works on x86. I've allready filed a bug upstream per Jan's request http://www.blackdown.org/cgi-bin/jdk/incoming?id=5978;page=666;user=guest I will attach the error log to this bug as well.

steps to reproduce:
1. goto http://lavalife.com and create an account(don't worry, it's free)
2. login and in about 30 seconds the browser will crash.

Always crashes on www.java.com as well. A much easier test.
CLI output:
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not start JavaVM!

System error?:: Success
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (255)

output of firefox with debug turned on

It is 100 percent reproducible on my system if you

1. Go to http://www.londoncyclenetwork.org.uk/webmap
2. User name "public", password "public"
3. Accept the java applet from Itergraph.

Note the glibc error at the end of the log.

this bug is terribly old... any chance it got fixed automatically with 1.4.2.03-r2?
Comment 6 Josh Nichols (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-21 14:23:32 UTC
The filed bug isn't even accessible anymore, and upstream doens't seem to be so alive lately.

If it's still a problem with the latest version, I'm inclined to mark it CANTFIX.

This is still valid, and it's really irritating. My favorite site put a java Santa Claus to there site, and it's always crashing my browser.

I noticed that the sun-jdk has the nsplugin USE flag masked, so the only java version with browser support is this, and it's crashing all the time. Am I missing something? How can I enable java support in my browser in amd64?

Invalid via Anarchy.

Try adblock or some other extension to disable java on that particular site... Or get rid of /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/javaplugin.so completely.

Yes, Sun really still doesn't provide a plugin for amd64, even in 1.6 :( hopefully the GPLing of Java will lead to a solution :)

> How can I enable java support in my browser in amd64?
Probably only by using 32bit browser and emul-linux-x86-java

Sounds too harsh to me :)

UPSTREAM as we can't do much about binary packages ourselves.
Comment 11 William L. Thomson Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-12-20 08:17:35 UTC
For alternative plugins on amd64, please emerge a -bin browser, either firefox or opera. Then emerge the emul java stuff. You can get a 1.5 plugin that way, and it's a bit more stable than blackdown. Not to mention you can get Flash and other 32bit only plugins. No need for a chroot or etc.
Comment 12 ProTech 2006-12-20 12:58:52 UTC
Currently I disabled the nsplugin USE flag on balckdown-jdk, so it's at least not crashing anymore.

Here is an almost 4 year bug asking for amd64 plugin support :(

My only hope is the new GPL'd java, Sun obviously don't care about this.
