Microsoft seems intent to push snap packages from now on. archive.org is a possible stop gap measure. https://web.archive.org/web/20240507201923if_/https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux_8.110.76.107_amd64.deb https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.deb works, but has no version info around that i'm aware of, other than what's inside the deb. https://search.apps.ubuntu.com/api/v1/package/skype at least has version number attached, but only the latest version seems available. Parsing the snap file requires squashfs support in kernel, which is a fun dependency for a package manager. It would be possible to download https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.deb through archive.org tho, in which case we could ensure getting a specific version. It's also possible other distros would undertake repackaging it, in which case we could piggyback on them, too. Putting our load on third parties is not optimal either, tho. In any case I don't see any way to get versioned ebuilds off of Microsoft official channels now. Sucks all around.
A new skype is out there. https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux_8.109.0.209_amd64.deb /tmp # wget https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux_8.109.0.209_amd64.deb --2025-01-21 20:23:03-- https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux_8.109.0.209_amd64.deb Resolving repo.skype.com... 104.107.104.167, 2600:1406:3a00:497::1263, 2600:1406:3a00:493::1263 Connecting to repo.skype.com|104.107.104.167|:443... connected. (In reply to George L. Emigh from comment #8) > A new skype is out there. But this opens more questions. Like which one if any of those listed here. https://pkgs.org/download/skypeforlinux skypeforlinux latest version: 8.134.0.202
My apologies for the noise. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/forum/all/skype-for-linux-updates/da864865-d9e9-4819-8a5d-8de8934dd312
Once again, my sincere apologies for the noise. I have used neither Snap nor Flatpak on Gentoo. Snap is listed as an option (Cringe) Seems Flatpak is an option as well https://flathub.org/apps/com.skype.Client Maybe someone with more experience than I can locate a usable source/bin package. Thank you to whoever maintained the skypeforlinux package till now, and if any in the future.
I think the ticket can be resolved, since Microsoft discontinued the non-Snap Linux versions. @George it's sad indeed, but unfortunately there's no other way. If you're using Plasma, you can use snapd directly from Discover application (kde-plasma/discover), or directly via command: snap install skype In order to use some packages it is indeed necessary to use snap or flat, or appimage, this seems to be the technological drive nowadays.
Actually, there's some overlays who're providing Skype through the snap version. See net-im/skypeforlinux-8.134.0.202_p378::xwing for instance.
It seems it unpacks the snap with unsquashfs: https://github.com/gentoo-mirror/xwing/blob/master/net-im/skypeforlinux/skypeforlinux-8.136.0.203_p382.ebuild The same strategy is now used in Arch Linux: https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree/PKGBUILD?h=skypeforlinux-bin
note: skype will be shutdown by May 5. Confirmed for a long time (since last year). Good thing I never needed it.

Seems they want to move everyone to Teams. https://www.newsweek.com/skype-microsoft-shut-down-discontinued-app-alternatives-2037872 To whoever made skype available to us Gentoo users all these years, I would like to say thank you.
